Instructions

Step 1: Prep & Score the Hot Dogs

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3 to 5 minutes.
  2. Using a small sharp paring knife, make light diagonal cross-hatch slashes (about ⅛-inch deep) across the top of each hot dog, spaced about ½ inch apart. Pro Tip: Scoring prevents the hot dogs from bursting under high heat and allows the edges to crisp up, creating extra surface area for toppings and sauces to cling to.

Step 2: Air Fry the Hot Dogs

  1. Arrange the scored hot dogs in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Ensure there is space between each hot dog so air circulates freely.
  2. Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 4 to 5 minutes .
  3. At the 3-minute mark, give the basket a gentle shake or flip the hot dogs with tongs so they brown evenly on all sides.

Step 3: Toast the Buns & Melt the Cheese

  1. Brush the insides of the hot dog buns with melted butter and optional garlic powder.
  2. Carefully transfer the cooked hot dogs into the buttered buns.
  3. If using cheese, tuck a slice of cheese underneath or over the hot dog inside the bun.
  4. Place the assembled hot dogs in buns back into the air fryer basket.
  5. Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 1 to 2 minutes until the buns are golden brown and crispy on the edges, and the cheese is fully melted.

Step 4: Top & Serve Immediately

  1. Remove the hot dogs carefully using tongs.
  2. Load with your favorite toppings and serve piping hot.
