Equipment
- Two mixing bowls: One for the dry ingredients and one for the wet ingredients.
- Fork or potato masher: Makes it easy to mash ripe bananas.
- Whisk: Combines the wet ingredients smoothly.
- Rubber spatula: Helps fold the batter without overmixing.
- Loaf pan: A standard 9 × 5-inch (23 × 13 cm) pan works well.
- Parchment paper: Prevents sticking and makes the loaf easier to remove.
- Wire cooling rack: Allows air to circulate around the loaf as it cools.
- Toothpick or cake tester: Helps check whether the center is fully baked.

Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) . Lightly grease a 9 × 5-inch loaf pan and line it with parchment paper, leaving some paper over the sides to make lifting the bread easier.
- Set the pan aside while you prepare the batter.
Step 2: Mash the Bananas
- Peel the ripe bananas and place them in a large bowl. Mash them with a fork until mostly smooth, leaving a few small lumps if you like a little banana texture.
- Very ripe bananas with brown spots are best because they are soft, sweet, and easy to incorporate into the batter.
Step 3: Mix the Wet Ingredients
- Add the eggs, oil or melted butter, Greek yogurt, and vanilla extract to the mashed bananas.
- Whisk until the mixture is smooth and evenly combined. If you are using melted butter, make sure it has cooled slightly before adding it so it does not cook the eggs.
Step 4: Combine the Dry Ingredients
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- Breaking up any cocoa lumps helps the chocolate flavor distribute evenly throughout the loaf.
Step 5: Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients
- Add the dry ingredients to the banana mixture. Use a spatula to fold everything together gently until no large patches of dry flour remain.
- The batter should be thick, rich, and chocolate-colored. Do not beat it vigorously or continue mixing after the ingredients are combined, as overmixing can make the bread dense.
Step 6: Add the Chocolate Chips
- Fold in ½ cup of chocolate chips or chopped chocolate, if using. You can also add chopped walnuts for a little crunch.
- Reserve a small handful of chocolate chips to sprinkle over the top before baking.
Step 7: Transfer to the Loaf Pan
- Spoon the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread it evenly with a spatula.
- Sprinkle the reserved chocolate chips over the surface. Gently tap the pan against the counter once or twice to remove any large air pockets.
Step 8: Bake the Chocolate Banana Bread
- Place the pan on the center rack of the preheated oven. Bake for approximately 50–60 minutes .
- Begin checking around the 45-minute mark because ovens and loaf pans vary. The top should look set, and a toothpick inserted into the center should come out with a few moist crumbs but no wet batter.
- If the top becomes dark before the center is ready, loosely cover the loaf with aluminum foil and continue baking.
Step 9: Check for Doneness
- Insert a toothpick into the thickest part of the loaf, avoiding any melted chocolate chips if possible.
- A few moist crumbs are normal for a tender chocolate banana bread. If the toothpick has raw batter on it, bake for another 5 minutes and test again.
- For food safety, ensure the eggs are fully cooked and the loaf is not raw in the center.
Step 10: Cool the Loaf
- Remove the pan from the oven and let the bread cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes.
- Use the parchment paper to lift the loaf carefully onto a wire rack. Allow it to cool for at least another 30 minutes before slicing.
- Cooling helps the crumb set, making the loaf easier to cut without crumbling.
Step 11: Slice and Serve
- Use a sharp serrated knife to cut the cooled loaf into 10 slices.
- Serve plain or with a light spread of butter, peanut butter, or hazelnut spread. For dessert, warm a slice slightly and add a small scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Step 12: Enjoy and Store the Leftovers
- Enjoy a slice with coffee, tea, or milk. Once the remaining loaf has cooled completely, wrap it or transfer it to an airtight container.
- Proper storage helps retain the moisture and chocolate flavor without allowing excess condensation to build up.
