A craft project transforming simple household items into stunning, translucent decorative pieces that resemble delicate stained glass. This method uses cornstarch, water, and clear glue to create durable, flexible keepsakes that encase pressed flowers, suitable for window clings, ornaments, or jewelry components.

Equipment

  • Silicone molds (heart, flower, or other desired shapes)
  • Small mixing bowls
  • Spoon or whisk for mixing
  • Measuring cups
  • Wax paper or parchment paper
  • Tweezers
  • Toothpicks

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Pure Corn Starch
  • 1/2 cup Cold Water
  • 1/2 cup Elmer’s Clear Glue (or similar non-toxic, clear school glue)
  • Assorted small, pressed flowers (ensure they are fully dried)
  • Optional: Wax paper or parchment paper for drying
  • Optional: Tweezers for flower placement
  • Optional: Toothpicks for bubble removal

Instructions

  1. Prepare your workspace by laying down wax paper or a protective mat and ensuring good ventilation.
  2. Gather and press flowers, ensuring they are small, flat, and thoroughly dried to prevent moisture issues.
  3. Measure 1/2 cup of pure corn starch, 1/2 cup of cold water, and 1/2 cup of clear glue into separate containers.
  4. Combine the corn starch and cold water in a mixing bowl, stirring thoroughly until completely dissolved into a smooth, milky slurry with no lumps.
  5. Pour the clear glue into the cornstarch and water mixture, stirring continuously and gently until fully incorporated; avoid over-stirring to minimize air bubbles.
  6. Place clean silicone molds on the work surface.
  7. Using tweezers if desired, carefully arrange the pressed flowers into the bottom of the silicone molds, keeping in mind that the side facing down will be the front of the finished piece.
  8. Slowly and carefully pour the cornstarch glass mixture over the arranged flowers, filling each mold to the desired thickness and ensuring the flowers are completely covered.
  9. Gently tap the silicone mold against the work surface to help trapped air bubbles rise, and use a toothpick to pop any stubborn surface bubbles.
  10. Place the filled molds in a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight or excessive humidity.
  11. Allow the pieces to air dry completely for 24 to 72 hours or longer, depending on thickness and humidity; do not heat dry.
  12. Once completely dry and hard, gently flex the silicone to release the edges and demold the translucent pieces.
  13. Optional: Poke a small hole with a needle or awl before fully dry for hanging, or brush with a clear sealant for a glossier, more durable finish.

Notes

Ensure flowers are completely dry to prevent mold. Use cold water to help dissolve cornstarch without clumping. If the mixture has too many bubbles, let it sit for 10-15 minutes before pouring. Thinner pours are more delicate, while thicker pieces are more durable but take longer to dry. For a subtle tint, add a tiny drop of liquid watercolor or gel food coloring. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and high humidity. These are decorative items and not edible.
