Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Bread

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for about 3 minutes so it is hot and ready.
  2. Lay your thick slice of bread on a clean cutting board.
  3. Using a round cookie cutter or the rim of a small glass, press firmly into the center of the bread slice to cut out a clean circle. (Don’t throw away the cutout center—toast it right alongside the main slice to dip into your egg later!)

Step 2: Butter and Season

  1. Using a pastry brush, gently brush both sides of the bread slice (and the cutout circle) with melted butter or spray lightly with olive oil.
  2. Season the top of the bread with a pinch of kosher salt and black pepper.

Step 3: Air Fry the Bread Base

  1. Place the buttered slice of bread directly into your air fryer basket or onto the air fryer tray.
  2. Toast the bread alone for 2 minutes at 350°F (175°C) . This initial toast prevents the bread from becoming soggy when the wet egg white hits it.

Step 4: Add the Egg

  1. Carefully open the air fryer basket. Crack your fresh egg directly into the cutout hole in the center of the bread. (Tip: Crack the egg into a small ramekin first for easier pouring without spilling over the edges).
  2. Season the exposed egg with a small pinch of salt, pepper, and optional everything bagel seasoning or shredded cheese.

Step 5: Cook to Perfection

  1. Return the basket to the air fryer and cook at 350°F (175°C) for 4 to 6 minutes .
  2. Check at the 4-minute mark: For a runny yolk: Cook for 4 to 5 minutes.
  3. For a medium-firm yolk: Cook for 6 to 7 minutes.

Step 6: Serve Immediately

  1. Carefully lift the air-fried egg in a hole out of the basket using a spatula.
  2. Serve hot with your toasted bread cutout on the side for dipping into that glorious golden yolk.
