Traditional stovetop skillet cooking requires constant monitoring to ensure even browning and often leaves cold pockets of un-melted cheese in the middle. The air fryer solves both issues: 360-Degree Heat Distribution: Circulating convection air crisp-fries the outer bread surfaces evenly while surrounding the sandwich in a high-heat vault. Superior Cheese Pull: The rapid heat penetration completely melts sharp cheddar and Swiss right to their core in under 8 minutes. No Soggy Bread: Excess steam escapes through the basket perforations, keeping the bottom slice as crisp as the top.
Ingredients
- 4 slices Sourdough or Thick Artisan Bread
- 6 slices Deli Ham (Honey or Black Forest), thinly shaved
- 4 slices Sharp Cheddar Cheese
- 4 slices Gruyère or Swiss Cheese
- 2 tbsp Unsalted Butter (softened)
- 1 tbsp Dijon Mustard
- 1 tbsp Mayonnaise (optional)
Instructions
- Lay out 4 slices of thick bread on a clean cutting board. Spread a light layer of Dijon mustard across the inside surfaces of all slices.
- On two of the slices, lay down 2 slices of Sharp Cheddar. Layer 3 folded slices of deli ham on top of each. Top the ham with 2 slices of Gruyère or Swiss cheese. Cover with the remaining bread slices.
- In a small bowl, mix the softened butter and mayonnaise together until smooth. Spread this mixture evenly across the outside top and bottom surfaces of both sandwiches.
- Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (193°C) for 3 minutes. Carefully place the sandwiches inside the air fryer basket in a single layer, ensuring they do not overlap. Insert a toothpick through the center of each sandwich to keep the layers firmly anchored during the first few minutes.
- Air fry at 380°F (193°C) for 5 minutes. Open the basket, remove the toothpicks, and carefully flip the sandwiches using a silicone spatula. Cook for an additional 3 minutes until both sides are deep golden brown and the cheese is fully melted and bubbling out the edges.
- Remove the sandwiches from the air fryer and let them rest on a cutting board for 1 to 2 minutes to let the cheese set slightly. Slice diagonally and serve hot.
Notes
Keto / Low-Carb Swap: Substitute traditional sourdough with low-carb or keto-friendly bread slices, or wrap the ham and cheese in a low-carb tortilla for a crispy air-fryer roll-up. Sweet & Savory Twist: Brush a thin coating of hot honey or fig jam onto the inside of the top bread slice before air frying. Spicy Kick: Add pickled jalapeno slices or a splash of hot sauce between the ham and cheese layers.
