Equipment
- Air Fryer (at least 5-quart capacity recommended for proper spacing)
- Three shallow bowls or pie pans (for the breading station)
- Whisk and baking sheet
- Tongs or a fork
Ingredients
For the Onions & Breading Station:
- Large Yellow or Sweet Onions: 2 large onions (Vidalia or sweet onions work best for their mild, sweet flavor), peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch thick rings, separated
- All-Purpose Flour: 1/2 cup (used for the initial dry coating to help the batter stick)
- Garlic Powder: 1 teaspoon
- Paprika: 1 teaspoon (adds a subtle smoky flavor and gorgeous golden color)
- Salt: 1 teaspoon (divided)
- Black Pepper: 1/2 teaspoon
- Large Eggs: 2 whole eggs, beaten well with 1 tablespoon of water
- Panko Breadcrumbs: 1.5 cups (Panko provides a much crispier, lighter crunch than traditional fine breadcrumbs)
For Crisping and Finishing:
- Olive Oil Spray or Avocado Oil Spray: Essential for helping the breadcrumbs turn golden brown in the air fryer (avoid aerosol cooking sprays with propellants that can damage non-stick air fryer baskets).
- Flaky Sea Salt: A pinch for finishing right out of the basket.

Instructions
Step 1: Slice and Soak the Onions
- Peel the outer papery layers from your large yellow or sweet onions. Slice off the stem ends, then cut the onions crosswise into 1/2-inch thick rounds.
- Carefully pop out the individual rings, separating the larger outer rings for the recipe (you can save the smaller inner pieces for soups or salads).
- Pro-Tip: Soak the separated onion rings in a bowl of cold water or milk for about 10 minutes. This helps reduce the sharp, pungent bite of raw onions and softens them slightly. Drain and pat completely dry with paper towels before breading.
Step 2: Set Up the Breading Station
- To ensure an efficient and mess-free breading process, set up three shallow bowls in a clean assembly line:
- Bowl 1 (The Dry Mix): Combine the all-purpose flour, garlic powder, paprika, half of the salt, and black pepper. Whisk together until uniform.
- Bowl 2 (The Wet Mix): Whisk the 2 large eggs together with 1 tablespoon of water until smooth.
- Bowl 3 (The Crunch): Place the Panko breadcrumbs in the third bowl, mixing in the remaining salt for extra seasoning.
Step 3: Bread the Onion Rings
- Working in small batches, take an onion ring and dredge it thoroughly in the flour mixture , shaking off any excess. The flour acts as an anchor for the egg wash.
- Dip the floured onion ring into the beaten egg , ensuring it is completely coated, and let any excess drip back into the bowl.
- Transfer the ring into the Panko breadcrumbs , pressing gently with your fingers to help the crumbs adhere into a thick, even crust. Place the breaded ring onto a clean baking sheet or plate. Repeat with the remaining rings.
Step 4: Air Fry to Crispy Perfection
- Preheat your air fryer to 200°C (400°F) for about 3 to 5 minutes so it is hot and ready.
- Lightly spray the air fryer basket with olive oil or avocado oil spray. Arrange the onion rings in a single layer inside the basket. Do not overcrowd the basket ; cook in two separate batches if necessary. Overcrowding prevents the air from circulating properly and leads to soggy spots.
- Generously mist the tops of the onion rings in the basket with your oil spray. This step is critical for achieving a golden, fried texture without deep frying.
- Cook at 200°C (400°F) for 10 to 12 minutes , flipping the onion rings halfway through at the 6-minute mark, and giving them another light spray of oil on the newly flipped side.
- Cook until the Panko coating is deeply golden brown and audibly crunchy.
Step 5: Serve Immediately
- Transfer the hot, crispy onion rings to a wire rack or plate lined with a paper towel.
- Sprinkle immediately with a tiny pinch of flaky sea salt while they are still piping hot. Serve right away alongside your favorite dipping sauces such as ranch, chipotle mayo, or classic ketchup!
