Servings2 (2 bagel halves per person)
Equipment
- Air Fryer: Any standard model (Basket or Oven style).
- Tongs: For safe retrieval.
- Spatula: For removing bagels without losing toppings.
- Knife: For splitting bagels.
Ingredients
- 2 Large Bagels: Plain, Everything, or Sesame work best. Avoid “thin” bagels as they tend to burn before the cheese melts. If using frozen bagels, thaw them first.
- ½ Cup Pizza Sauce (or Marinara): Use a thick sauce. Watery sauce will make the bagel soggy. If your sauce is thin, strain it slightly.
- 1 Cup Low-Moisture Mozzarella Cheese: Shredded. Do not use fresh mozzarella packed in water; it releases too much liquid. A pizza blend (Mozzarella, Provolone, Cheddar) works great too.
- Optional Toppings: 12 slices of Pepperoni (or mini pepperonis)
- Sliced black olives
- Diced green bell peppers
- Sautéed mushrooms
- Red pepper flakes
- Dried Oregano or Italian Seasoning
- Grated Parmesan Cheese
- Fresh Basil (for garnish)

Instructions
Phase 1: Preparation (Intensity: Low)
- Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheating is crucial for pizza bagels. Set your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3 minutes. If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheat function, simply run it empty for 3 minutes.
- Split the Bagels: Using a serrated knife, slice your bagels in half horizontally. Ensure the cut is even so they cook uniformly.
- Prep the Sauce: Get your sauce ready. If you are using cold sauce from the fridge, consider microwaving it for 15 seconds. Warm sauce spreads easier and helps the bagel heat through faster.
Phase 2: Assembly (Intensity: Low)
- Sauce Application: Place the bagel halves face up. Spoon about 1 to 1.5 tablespoons of sauce onto each half. Spread it in a circular motion, leaving a small “rim” of bare bagel around the edge. This rim prevents the sauce and cheese from spilling over during the cooking process.
- Cheese Layer: Sprinkle a generous amount of mozzarella cheese over the sauce. Do not mound it too high, or the top will burn before the bottom is crisp. Aim for an even layer that covers the sauce completely.
- Add Toppings: If using pepperoni, place 3–4 slices on top of the cheese. If using veggies, pat them dry with a paper towel before adding to remove excess moisture.
Phase 3: The Air Fry (Intensity: High)
- This is where the magic happens. Air fryers cook fast, so stay nearby.
- Arrange in Basket: Place the bagel halves in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook in batches. Leave a little space between each bagel half for air circulation.
- The First Blast (Cheese Melt): Set the temperature to 375°F (190°C) and set the timer for 4 minutes . This initial high heat melts the cheese and starts the crisping process on the crust.
- The Second Blast (Browning): After 4 minutes, open the basket. The cheese should be melted but pale. If you like a darker, bubbly top, increase the temperature to 400°F (200°C) and cook for an additional 2 to 3 minutes . Note on Intensity: Watch the bagels closely during these last 2 minutes. The sugar in the sauce and the oil in the cheese can go from perfect to burnt in seconds.
- The Pause: Once the cheese is bubbling and spotted brown, remove the basket. Let the bagels rest for 1 minute before eating. This allows the cheese to set slightly so you don’t burn the roof of your mouth.
Phase 4: Finishing (Intensity: Low)
- Garnish: Transfer to a plate. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan, dried oregano, or fresh basil. Serve immediately.
