Ingredients

  • Fresh Ginger Root: 4 ounces (about a large thumb-sized piece or a 4-inch hand), thoroughly washed and thinly sliced (no need to peel if organic, just scrub clean).
  • Fresh Lemons: 3 medium-sized, juiced (yielding about 1/2 cup of fresh juice) plus the zest of 1 lemon.
  • Raw Honey: 3 to 4 tablespoons (adjust to taste; use local raw honey for the best flavor and natural wellness properties).
  • Filtered Water: 3 cups.
  • Ground Turmeric (Optional): 1/2 teaspoon, for an extra anti-inflammatory kick and a vibrant golden hue.
  • Black Pepper (Optional): A tiny pinch, which helps the body absorb the curcumin if you use turmeric.

Instructions

Step 1: Prep and Slice the Ginger

  1. Rinse your fresh ginger root thoroughly under cold running water to remove any lingering dirt.
  2. Slice the ginger thinly across the grain. Thinner slices maximize the surface area exposed to the water, allowing the potent gingerol compounds to infuse more efficiently during simmering.

Step 2: Simmer the Aromatics

  1. Combine the 3 cups of filtered water, sliced ginger, lemon zest, and optional turmeric powder in a small saucepan.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a rolling boil.
  3. Once boiling, immediately reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a lid, and let it simmer gently for 15 minutes . This slow extraction process ensures the water absorbs the full medicinal and aromatic profile of the ginger.

Step 3: Cool and Strain

  1. Remove the saucepan from the heat source.
  2. Let the mixture cool down to a warm, comfortable temperature (about 10 to 15 minutes). Crucial Tip: Do not add honey to boiling or piping hot liquid, as extreme heat can degrade the delicate enzymes and beneficial compounds present in raw honey.
  3. Pour the liquid through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean glass jar or bowl, pressing down gently on the ginger slices with the back of a spoon to extract every last drop of goodness. Discard the spent ginger and lemon zest.

Step 4: Stir in Honey and Lemon Juice

  1. Whisk in the freshly squeezed lemon juice (1/2 cup) into the warm strained ginger tea.
  2. Add the raw honey (3 to 4 tablespoons), stirring continuously until it is completely dissolved. Taste the elixir and adjust the sweetness or tartness to your personal preference.

Step 5: Serve or Store

  1. To Serve Immediately: Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy warm.
  2. To Store for Later: Transfer the elixir into a sealed glass mason jar or airtight bottle. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 5 to 7 days . Shake well before pouring a shot each morning.
