Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Chicken
- Remove any giblets from inside the chicken cavity. Rinse and pat the chicken completely dry using paper towels.
- Dry skin is very important because it helps achieve crispy, rotisserie-style results.
- If desired, tuck the wings under the body and tie the legs together with kitchen twine. This helps the chicken cook evenly.
Step 2: Season the Chicken
- In a bowl, mix olive oil (or melted butter), salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, oregano, chili powder, and lemon juice.
- Rub the seasoning mixture all over the chicken, including under the skin if possible for deeper flavor.
- For best results, marinate the chicken in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or overnight.
Step 3: Add Aromatics (Optional but Recommended)
- Place onion, garlic, lemon, and herbs inside the cavity of the chicken. This adds moisture and enhances flavor from the inside out.
Step 4: Preheat the Air Fryer
- Preheat your air fryer to 180°C (350°F) for 3–5 minutes.
- Preheating ensures even cooking and helps start the crisping process immediately.
Step 5: Place the Chicken in the Air Fryer
- Carefully place the whole chicken breast-side down into the air fryer basket.
- Make sure it is centered and not touching the heating elements.
Step 6: First Cooking Phase
- Cook at 180°C (350°F) for 25 minutes.
- This allows the fat to render and the skin to start crisping.
Step 7: Flip the Chicken
- Using tongs, carefully flip the chicken so it is breast-side up.
- Continue cooking at 180°C (350°F) for another 20–25 minutes.
Step 8: Crisp the Skin
- Increase temperature to 200°C (400°F) and cook for an additional 5–10 minutes.
- This step creates the deep golden, rotisserie-style crispy skin.
Step 9: Check Doneness
- Use a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh (without touching bone).
- The internal temperature should reach 75°C (165°F) .
- If not fully cooked, continue in 3–5 minute intervals.
Step 10: Rest the Chicken
- Remove the chicken from the air fryer and let it rest for 10–15 minutes before carving.
- Resting allows juices to redistribute, keeping the meat moist and tender.
