Ingredients
- 1 medium head of cabbage
- 1 lb ground beef (or beef/pork mix)
- 1/2 cup uncooked rice
- 1 onion (finely chopped)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 egg
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce (or crushed tomatoes)
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp dried dill (or fresh)
- Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prep cabbage: Bring a large pot of water to boil. Carefully remove cabbage leaves and blanch until pliable.
- Make filling: Mix ground meat, rice, onion, garlic, egg, paprika, salt, and pepper in a bowl.
- Assemble rolls: Place a spoonful of filling in each cabbage leaf, fold sides, and roll tightly.
- Cook in sauce: Arrange rolls in a baking dish. Mix tomato sauce, paste, olive oil, dill, salt, and pepper. Pour over rolls. Cover with foil and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 1 hour until tender.
Notes
Trim the thick center vein of each cabbage leaf if needed to make rolling easier. For extra flavor, layer a few extra cabbage leaves on the bottom of the baking dish before adding the rolls. These rolls taste even better the next day as the flavors continue to develop. Serve with crusty bread or mashed potatoes for a complete meal.
