A crowd-pleasing dinner that looks impressive but comes together in less than 30 minutes. This recipe transforms humble crescent roll dough and seasoned ground beef into a stunning centerpiece that tastes even better than it looks.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 2 cans (8 ounces each) refrigerated crescent roll dough
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or Mexican blend)
- 1 medium onion, finely diced
- 2 tablespoons taco seasoning
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- For the Toppings: 1 cup sour cream
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1/2 cup diced tomatoes
- 1/4 cup sliced black olives (optional)
- 1/4 cup sliced jalapeños (optional)
- Fresh cilantro for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F. Line a large baking sheet or pizza stone with parchment paper. Get all your ingredients measured and ready.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and diced onions together. Break up the meat with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes until the beef is completely browned and the onions turn translucent and fragrant.
- Drain any excess fat from the pan. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Stir in the taco seasoning and water. Let it simmer for 3 to 4 minutes until the liquid mostly evaporates and the mixture thickens slightly. Remove from heat and let it cool for 5 minutes.
- Unroll both cans of crescent roll dough and separate into 16 triangles. Arrange them in a circle on your prepared baking sheet with the wide ends overlapping in the center and the pointed ends facing outward. The wide ends should overlap by about 2 inches in the center, creating a 5-inch empty circle in the middle.
- Spoon the seasoned ground beef mixture onto the overlapping dough in the center, creating an even ring around the circle. Top generously with shredded cheese. Fold the pointed ends of each triangle up and over the filling, tucking the tip under the base to secure.
- Slide your assembled Taco Ring into the preheated oven. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes until the crescent roll dough turns a gorgeous golden brown and the cheese is bubbling through the openings.
- Let the ring cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before slicing. Transfer to a serving platter and pile the center with your favorite toppings: crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, cool sour cream, and whatever else makes you happy. Slice into wedges and serve.
Notes
Protein Swaps: Ground turkey or chicken work beautifully if you want a lighter version. Plant-based crumbles can also be used. Cheese Options: Try pepper jack for heat, or a Mexican blend for complexity. Cream cheese mixed into the meat adds richness. Make It Spicier: Add diced green chiles, chipotle powder, or fresh jalapeños to the meat mixture. Gluten-Free Version: Use gluten-free crescent roll alternatives or gluten-free puff pastry. Meal Prep Friendly: Brown and season the meat up to two days ahead. You can also assemble the entire ring and refrigerate for up to 4 hours before baking. Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a 350°F oven for 8 to 10 minutes. Freeze baked slices for up to 2 months.
