Tender Air Fryer Baked Apples with Cinnamon & Pecan Crunch. When the crisp weather rolls in or you find yourself craving a wholesome, comforting dessert that comes together in minutes, these Air Fryer Baked Apples are the ultimate treat. Naturally sweet, warmly spiced, and finished with a satisfying crunchy pecan and oat topping, this dessert captures all the rich flavors of traditional apple pie without the hassle of rolling out pastry dough. Using the air fryer transforms raw apples into tender, melt-in-your-mouth perfection in a fraction of the traditional baking time. Whether served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or drizzled with Greek yogurt for a lighter post-meal snack, this recipe brings cozy autumn flavors straight to your kitchen table.

Ingredients

  • 2 Large Firm Baking Apples (Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Braeburn, or Fuji work wonderfully)

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry the apples thoroughly. Cut each apple directly in half from the stem to the base. Using a melon baller, a small metal spoon, or a sharp paring knife, carefully scoop out the core and seeds from each apple half. Create a small cavity in the center to hold the delicious filling. Be careful not to pierce through the bottom or outer skin of the apple. Use a knife to score the flesh of the apple halves in a crosshatch pattern (making shallow diagonal cuts). This allows the heat and flavors to penetrate deeply as they cook.
  2. In a small mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, chopped pecans, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Stir well to distribute the spices. Add 1 tablespoon of melted butter (or maple syrup) directly into the dry oat mixture and stir until crumbly and evenly moistened.
  3. Brush the exposed flesh of each apple half lightly with melted butter or maple syrup to lock in moisture and add extra rich flavor. Spoon the cinnamon-pecan oat mixture firmly into the cavity of each apple half, pressing down gently so it stays packed inside. Dot the top of each stuffed filling with a tiny cube of cold butter. As the air fryer runs, this butter will melt down through the oats and apples, creating a rich, caramelized glaze.
  4. Preheat your air fryer to 360°F (180°C) for 3 to 5 minutes. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking oil, or line it with a perforated parchment paper sheet designed for air fryers. Carefully place the stuffed apple halves in a single layer inside the air fryer basket, leaving a little space between each piece. Air fry at 360°F (180°C) for 12 to 15 minutes. Check the apples around the 12-minute mark by piercing the side with a fork. They are done when the flesh is fork-tender and easily pierced, but the apple still holds its structural shape without collapsing. The topping should be deeply golden and toasted.
  5. Remove the baked apples gently from the air fryer using a spatula or tongs. Let them rest for 3 to 5 minutes before serving (the interior will be extremely hot!). Transfer to individual dessert plates, and serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a dollop of Greek yogurt, or an extra drizzle of maple syrup.

Notes

Choose the Right Apple: Firm apples that hold their shape under heat work best. Honeycrisp offers a fantastic sweet-tart balance, while Granny Smith provides a tangier contrast to the sweet brown sugar filling. Avoid soft varieties like Red Delicious, which can turn mushy in the air fryer. Prevent Drying Out: If your air fryer runs exceptionally hot and you notice the oats browning too quickly before the apple is tender inside, loosely tent a small piece of foil over the top of the apples for the first 8 minutes of cooking. Make-Ahead Option: You can core and fill the apples a few hours in advance, keeping them covered in the refrigerator until you are ready to drop them straight into the air fryer for a quick dessert after dinner.
