These toasted sandwiches are fast, customizable, and require very little cleanup. Unlike traditional pan-fried sandwiches, the air fryer circulates hot air around the bread, helping both sides become crisp and evenly browned. You also have excellent control over the final texture: cook for a little less time for lightly toasted bread or add another minute or two for a deeper, crunchier finish. They are especially useful when you want something comforting but don’t want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices sandwich bread
  • 4 slices cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite melting cheese
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter
  • 1 small tomato, thinly sliced
  • ¼ small onion, thinly sliced
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise or your favorite sandwich spread
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup or chili sauce, optional

Instructions

  1. Start by washing and preparing your vegetables. Slice the tomato and onion very thinly so they cook quickly and don’t make the sandwich excessively wet.
  2. Place the softened butter in a small bowl and mix in the garlic powder, black pepper, and dried oregano. This seasoned butter will add extra flavor to the toasted bread.
  3. Lay four slices of bread on a clean surface. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise or your preferred sandwich spread over two slices.
  4. Add the cheese, followed by a few slices of tomato and onion. If you’re adding cooked chicken or another protein, place it evenly over the vegetables. Sprinkle a small amount of black pepper and oregano over the filling if desired.
  5. Place the remaining bread slices on top to form two sandwiches. Avoid overfilling the sandwiches.
  6. Spread the seasoned butter evenly over the outside of each sandwich. Make sure the butter reaches close to the edges.
  7. Preheat your air fryer to 180°C / 350°F for about 3 minutes.
  8. Place the sandwiches carefully in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Leave a little space between them so hot air can circulate.
  9. Cook at 180°C / 350°F for 3–4 minutes.
  10. Carefully open the air fryer and flip the sandwiches using a spatula or tongs. Cook for another 3–4 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and crisp and the cheese has melted.
  11. Remove the sandwiches from the air fryer and allow them to rest for 1–2 minutes before cutting.
  12. Use a sharp knife to cut each sandwich in half diagonally. Serve immediately while the bread is still crisp and the cheese is warm and stretchy.

Notes

For the best results, use medium cooking intensity at 180°C / 350°F. Lightly toasted: 5–6 minutes total; Golden and crisp: 6–8 minutes total; Extra crispy: 8–9 minutes total, checking frequently. If your air fryer runs particularly hot, use 175°C / 345°F and check the sandwiches earlier. If your air fryer is less powerful, you may need an additional 1–2 minutes. Don’t overfill. Use thin vegetable slices. Choose good melting cheese. Butter the outside. Watch the final minutes. Don’t overcrowd the basket. Secure loose fillings if necessary. For storage, allow leftovers to cool completely and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To reheat, place the sandwich back in the air fryer at 160°C / 320°F for 3–5 minutes, turning once halfway through. Avoid using the microwave if possible.
