Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Apples

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C / 350°F .
  2. Peel the apples if desired, then remove the cores and slice them thinly.
  3. Place the apple slices in a bowl and toss them with the lemon juice. Add the cinnamon and gently mix.
  4. The lemon juice helps keep the apples looking fresh while also adding a subtle brightness to the finished dessert.

Step 2: Prepare the Batter

  1. In a large mixing bowl, crack in the three eggs.
  2. Add the sugar and whisk until the mixture becomes smooth and slightly lighter.
  3. Pour in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Whisk again until everything is well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, whisking gently until you have a smooth batter.
  6. Do not overmix. The goal is simply to combine everything evenly.

Step 3: Arrange the Apples

  1. Grease a round or square baking dish with a little butter.
  2. Arrange about half of the apple slices across the bottom of the dish.
  3. Pour some of the batter over the apples.
  4. Add the remaining apple slices and pour the rest of the batter over them.
  5. Gently shake the pan so the batter settles around the apples.
  6. For an extra golden top, sprinkle a little brown sugar and cinnamon over the surface.
  7. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven.
  8. Bake for approximately 35–45 minutes , depending on the size and depth of your baking dish.
  9. The dessert should become lightly golden on top and feel set around the edges. The center can remain slightly soft because the apples release moisture as they bake.
  10. Insert a toothpick into a batter-heavy area rather than directly into an apple slice. It should come out mostly clean when the cake is ready.
  11. If the top begins browning too quickly, loosely cover it with aluminum foil for the final part of baking.
