Ginger and lemon water is a simple drink made with dried ginger, fresh lemons, water, and optional honey. It has a warm, spicy ginger flavor balanced by the fresh and slightly sour taste of lemon. It can be enjoyed hot, chilled, or served over ice, depending on the season and your preference. This drink is very easy to prepare at home. You only need a few ingredients and around 30 minutes of active preparation and simmering time.
Ingredients
- 20–30 g organic ginger in dried slices
- 2 organic lemons
- 1.5 liters water
- 2 tablespoons honey, optional
Instructions
- Pour 1.5 liters of water into a pot and bring it to a boil.
- Add the dried ginger slices to the boiling water.
- Lower the heat and gently simmer the ginger for 15–20 minutes. Use 15 minutes for a milder flavor or 20 minutes for a stronger ginger taste.
- While the ginger cooks, wash the lemons well and cut them into thin slices. Keep the peel on.
- Remove the pot from the heat and let the ginger water cool slightly.
- If using honey, add it now and stir until it dissolves.
- Add the lemon slices to the warm ginger water.
- Leave the mixture at room temperature for 1–2 hours so the flavors can blend.
- Strain the drink to remove the ginger pieces and lemon slices.
- Pour the finished ginger lemon water into a carafe or airtight bottle.
- Refrigerate until chilled.
- Serve cold over ice for a refreshing drink.
Notes
For stronger flavor: Use 30 g of ginger and simmer for 20 minutes. For a 1-liter batch: Divide all ingredient quantities by 1.5. For a less acidic drink: Leave out the lemons and make simple ginger water. For cold ginger water: Steep the ginger in cold water overnight in the refrigerator for a milder flavor. For a warm drink: Strain and serve the drink warm instead of refrigerating it. For sweetness: Add honey while the ginger water is still warm so it dissolves easily. Fresh ginger: Fresh ginger can be grated or cut into small pieces and used instead of dried slices. Avoid powdered ginger: Powder can make the drink cloudy and give it an unpleasant grainy texture. Flavor variations: Try mint, cinnamon, cucumber, orange, berries, star anise, or turmeric. Health note: This drink is a food beverage, not a medical treatment. If you take medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare professional before making concentrated ginger drinks a regular habit.
