Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Oven and Dish
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Lightly grease a medium-sized baking dish with butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking.
Step 2: Assemble the Layers
- Cut or tear the bread into cubes. Spread half of the bread evenly across the bottom of the dish. Add a layer of ham, followed by a generous sprinkle of shredded cheese. Repeat with the remaining bread, ham, and cheese to form a layered structure.
Step 3: Make the Custard Mixture
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Whisk until the mixture is smooth and well combined. This custard will bind the bake together and create its creamy texture.
Step 4: Combine and Soak
- Pour the custard mixture evenly over the layered bread, ham, and cheese. Press down gently with a spatula or spoon to ensure all the bread absorbs the liquid. Let it sit for about 10 minutes so the bread can fully soak up the custard.
Step 5: Prepare the Topping
- In a small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with melted butter, Parmesan cheese, and paprika. Stir until the crumbs are evenly coated. This mixture will create the signature golden crust.
Step 6: Add the Crust
- Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top of the bake. Make sure to cover the surface completely for a consistent crunch.
Step 7: Bake to Perfection
- Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35–40 minutes. The top should turn golden brown, and the center should be set but still slightly soft. If the top browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil during the last 10 minutes.
Step 8: Rest and Serve
- Remove from the oven and allow the bake to rest for 5–10 minutes before serving. This helps it firm up slightly, making it easier to slice and serve.
