Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Mozzarella Sticks
- Unwrap the mozzarella string cheese sticks and place them on a plate or cutting board. If you prefer shorter snacks, cut each stick in half to create 24 smaller pieces.
- Arrange the cheese sticks in a single layer on a parchment-lined tray that fits in your freezer. Freeze them for at least 1 hour, or until firm. For best results, freeze them for 1–2 hours.
- Freezing is an essential step because it helps the cheese maintain its shape while the breadcrumb coating becomes golden and crispy in the air fryer.
Step 2: Set Up the Breading Station
- Prepare three shallow bowls for coating the cheese sticks.
- In the first bowl, add the all-purpose flour. In the second bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until smooth. In the third bowl, combine the Italian breadcrumbs, panko breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, Italian seasoning, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
- Mix the breadcrumb ingredients thoroughly so that the seasonings are evenly distributed. This mixture creates a flavorful, crunchy coating with a delicious Italian-inspired taste.
Step 3: Coat the Mozzarella Sticks
- Remove a few frozen mozzarella sticks from the freezer at a time, keeping the remaining sticks frozen.
- First, roll each cheese stick in flour, shaking off any excess. Next, dip it into the egg mixture, making sure every side is covered. Finally, roll it in the seasoned breadcrumb mixture and gently press the crumbs onto the surface.
- For a thicker, more secure crust, dip each coated stick into the egg mixture again and then into the breadcrumbs a second time. Pay particular attention to the ends, as exposed cheese can leak out during cooking.
- Repeat the process with all the mozzarella sticks.
Step 4: Freeze the Coated Sticks
- Place the breaded mozzarella sticks back on the lined tray in a single layer. Return them to the freezer for at least 30–60 minutes.
- This second freezing step helps the coating adhere to the cheese and reduces the chance of the mozzarella leaking out before the outside becomes crispy.
- If you are preparing them ahead of time, you can keep the coated sticks frozen until you are ready to cook them.
Step 5: Preheat the Air Fryer
- Preheat your air fryer to 390°F (200°C) for approximately 3 minutes, following your appliance’s instructions.
- Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray if appropriate for your model. Avoid using aerosol sprays that are not recommended for nonstick air fryer surfaces.
- Arrange the frozen mozzarella sticks in the basket in a single layer, leaving a little space between each piece. Do not overcrowd the basket, as good air circulation helps create an evenly crisp coating.
Step 6: Air Fry Until Golden
- Lightly spray the tops of the mozzarella sticks with olive oil spray. Air fry at 390°F (200°C) for approximately 6–8 minutes.
- Start checking them around the 5-minute mark because air fryer temperatures and cooking performance can vary. The coating should look golden and crisp, while the cheese inside should be soft and melted.
- Remove the sticks as soon as the coating is crisp and the cheese is beginning to soften. Avoid cooking them for too long, because overheated mozzarella can burst through the breading and leak into the basket.
- Cook in batches if necessary, returning uncooked sticks to the freezer while waiting.
Step 7: Serve and Enjoy
- Carefully transfer the cooked mozzarella sticks to a serving plate. Allow them to rest for about 1–2 minutes before serving, as the melted cheese will be very hot.
- Serve immediately with warm marinara sauce, pizza sauce, ranch dressing, or garlic dip. Garnish with a little chopped parsley or grated Parmesan cheese for an attractive presentation.
- These homemade mozzarella sticks taste best when served fresh, while the outside remains crunchy and the inside is soft and stretchy.
