Homemade Tutti Frutti Juice is a bright, fruit-forward elixir that marries the essence of mixed tropical and orchard fruits into a deeply refreshing, vibrant drink. By carefully simmering a balanced blend of fresh seasonal fruits, a touch of citrus, and warm aromatic spices, this recipe builds a concentrated fruit syrup that transforms ordinary water, sparkling water, or iced tea into an extraordinary glass of tutti frutti juice.
Ingredients
- 2 cups mixed fresh fruit (finely diced), such as ripe papaya, pineapple, green apple, and mango
- 1 orange (zest and juice)
- 1 lemon (zest and juice)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1.5 cups water
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 green cardamom pods
- 4 cups cold filtered water or sparkling water (for assembly)
- Fresh mint leaves (for garnish)
- Ice cubes
Instructions
- Wash all fresh fruits. Peel the papaya, mango, and green apple, discarding any seeds or cores. Dice all the fruits into very small, uniform pieces (roughly the size of traditional baking tutti frutti cubes).
- In a medium, heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the diced mixed fruit, water, granulated sugar, fresh orange juice, orange zest, lemon juice, lemon zest, cinnamon stick, and green cardamom pods. Stir gently to ensure the sugar is evenly distributed.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover partially, and let it simmer for 10 to 12 minutes until the fruits become translucent and soft.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and take out the whole cinnamon stick and cardamom pods. Allow the fruit reduction to cool completely to room temperature (about 20 to 30 minutes).
- Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve set over a large glass bowl or pitcher. Use the back of a spoon or spatula to press down firmly on the cooked fruit pulp to extract every last drop of flavored nectar.
- Pour the strained tutti frutti syrup into a clean pitcher. Add the 4 cups of cold filtered water (or sparkling water). Stir vigorously to combine. Taste and adjust the water ratio to preference.
- Place the pitcher in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to chill thoroughly. Serve in tall glasses filled with ice cubes, garnished with a fresh sprig of mint and a thin slice of orange or reserved fruit bits.
Notes
Fruit Variations: Customize the fruit blend based on what is in season; peaches, pears, and strawberries can be incorporated. Make-Ahead Friendly: The concentrated fruit syrup can be prepared up to a week in advance and stored in an airtight glass jar in the refrigerator. Natural Coloring: Add a drop of all-natural plant-based food coloring (like beet juice or turmeric extract) during the simmering stage for a brighter look. Do not discard the leftover strained fruit pulp; it can be used in oatmeal, yogurt bowls, or as a topping for vanilla ice cream.
