Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly coat it with cooking spray.
  2. Preheating the oven helps the dough bake evenly, producing a golden exterior with a light, flaky texture. Prepare your ingredients before assembling the poppers so the process is smooth and easy.

Step 2: Prepare the Jalapeño Peppers

  1. Wash the jalapeños thoroughly and dry them with a clean towel. Slice each pepper lengthwise down the middle and carefully remove the seeds and inner membranes using a small spoon.
  2. Removing the seeds and membranes reduces the heat, making the poppers milder and allowing the creamy cheese filling to stand out. If you prefer a spicier appetizer, leave a little of the inner membrane intact.
  3. For easier handling, wear disposable gloves when preparing the peppers and avoid touching your eyes or face.
  4. Arrange the jalapeño halves on a plate while you prepare the filling.

Step 3: Make the Cream Cheese Filling

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, Parmesan, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Mix thoroughly until the ingredients form a smooth, thick, and creamy filling. The cream cheese provides richness, while the cheddar adds a sharp, savory flavor. Parmesan contributes an extra layer of cheesy taste.
  3. If you enjoy additional flavor, stir in cooked crumbled bacon, chopped green onions, or a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes.
  4. Taste the mixture and adjust the seasonings according to your preference.

Step 4: Fill the Jalapeños

  1. Using a small spoon, carefully fill each jalapeño half with the prepared cheese mixture.
  2. Spread the filling evenly along the center of each pepper without overfilling. Leaving a little space around the edges helps prevent the cheese from spilling out excessively during baking.
  3. Once all the peppers are filled, set them aside while you prepare the dough.

Step 5: Cut the Crescent Dough into Strips

  1. Unroll the crescent roll dough onto a clean surface. If the dough has perforations, gently press them together to create a more continuous sheet.
  2. Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut the dough into thin strips approximately ¼ inch wide. The strips will become the mummy bandages, so they do not need to be perfectly uniform.
  3. Keep the dough chilled until you are ready to wrap the peppers. Cold dough is easier to handle and helps maintain its shape during baking.

Step 6: Wrap the Poppers Like Mummies

  1. Take one filled jalapeño half and gently wrap several dough strips around it. Cross the strips at different angles to create the appearance of mummy bandages.
  2. Leave small gaps between the strips so the cheese filling and pepper can peek through. Also, leave a small uncovered area near one end of each popper for the eyes.
  3. Place each wrapped popper on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between them. Repeat until all the jalapeño halves are wrapped.
  4. For a beautiful golden finish, lightly brush the dough with beaten egg. This step is optional, but it gives the mummy bandages a glossy, appetizing appearance.

Step 7: Bake Until Golden Brown

  1. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 15–18 minutes, or until the dough is puffed and golden brown and the cheese filling is hot.
  2. Check the poppers near the end of the cooking time because ovens and dough brands can vary. If the pastry browns too quickly, monitor the temperature and ensure the tray is positioned in the center of the oven.
  3. Remove the baking sheet when the dough is fully cooked and crisp around the edges. Allow the poppers to cool for approximately 5 minutes before decorating.

Step 8: Add the Mummy Eyes

  1. Once the poppers have cooled slightly, attach two edible eyes to the uncovered area of each mummy.
  2. If the eyes are not heat-safe, always add them after baking. You can use a tiny dab of cream cheese to help them stick in place.
  3. For a simple alternative, create two small dots using thick cream cheese or another suitable edible decoration.
  4. Arrange the finished Mummy Jalapeño Poppers on a serving platter and serve while warm.
