Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Cornflour Mixture
- Take a small bowl and add cornflour with a little amount of milk. Mix until the mixture becomes completely smooth.
- This step prevents lumps from forming when the custard cooks.
Step 2: Warm the Milk
- Pour the remaining milk into a saucepan. Add sugar and heat gently over low to medium heat.
- Stir occasionally until the sugar dissolves completely.
- Avoid boiling the milk because gentle heating creates a smoother custard texture.
Step 3: Add the Egg Yolks
- Beat the egg yolks separately until smooth.
- Slowly add some warm milk into the egg mixture while stirring continuously. This process helps prevent the eggs from cooking too quickly.
- Gradually combine the egg mixture with the saucepan.
Step 4: Cook the Custard
- Add the prepared cornflour mixture to the milk mixture.
- Cook over low heat while stirring constantly until the custard becomes thick and creamy.
- The texture should be smooth and able to coat the back of a spoon.
- Avoid cooking on high heat because it may create a grainy texture.
Step 5: Finish the Custard Layer
- Remove the saucepan from heat.
- Add vanilla extract and butter. Stir until the butter melts completely and the custard becomes glossy and smooth.
- Pour the custard into a serving dish, glasses, or jars.
- Allow it to cool slightly, then refrigerate for about 1 hour.
