Ingredients

  • 1 medium fresh nopal pad (pencas de nopal): Thorns completely removed, rinsed, and chopped into chunks. (Look for firm, bright green pads without blemishes).
  • 1 cup fresh pineapple chunks: Adds natural sweetness and tropical brightness to balance the earthiness of the cactus.
  • 1 medium ripe banana: Gives the smoothie a creamy, velvety texture and natural body.
  • 1 cup fresh orange juice or coconut water: Provides liquid base and a zesty citrus kick.
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice: Enhances the brightness and cuts through any natural plant flavors.
  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds or flaxseeds (optional): For an extra boost of healthy fats and texture.
  • 1 cup ice cubes: Ensures the drink is ice-cold and frosty.
  • Optional Sweetener: 1 teaspoon of honey, agave nectar, or raw cane sugar ( piloncillo ) if your pineapple needs extra sweetness.

Instructions

Step 1: Prep and Clean the Nopal

  1. Safety First: If your nopal pad still has tiny fine needles ( glochids ) or larger thorns, hold it safely with tongs or wear kitchen gloves. Use a sharp paring knife to slice off the outer edges and shave away any remaining thorny bumps.
  2. Rinse: Rinse the cleaned cactus pad thoroughly under cold running water. You will notice a slightly gelatinous texture on the surface—this is completely normal and provides the wonderful soluble fiber that nopal is famous for!
  3. Chop: Dice the nopal pad into rough 1-inch chunks so it blends smoothly.

Step 2: Combine Ingredients in the Blender

  1. Add your liquid base (orange juice or coconut water) into the bottom of your high-powered blender first. This helps the blades spin freely without getting stuck.
  2. Add the chopped nopal chunks, fresh pineapple chunks, and peeled banana.
  3. Pour in the fresh lime juice and add your optional chia seeds and sweetener if desired.

Step 3: Blend to Absolute Perfection

  1. Secure the blender lid tightly.
  2. Start blending on low speed to break down the chunks, then gradually increase to high speed.
  3. Blend on high for a full 60 to 90 seconds until the mixture is completely uniform, smooth, and frothy. If it feels too thick, splash in an extra 1/4 cup of water or coconut water.

Step 4: Add Ice and Finalize

  1. Drop in the ice cubes and pulse the blender a few times until the ice is crushed and incorporated, giving the licuado a frosty, chilling finish.
  2. Taste and adjust sweetness or lime juice according to your personal preference.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

  1. Pour the vibrant green licuado immediately into tall chilled glasses.
  2. Garnish the rim with a small pineapple wedge or a sprinkle of chia seeds if desired. Drink fresh and enjoy right away!
