Ingredients

  • Red Onions ( Allium cepa ): Red onions are exceptionally high in quercetin , a powerful flavonoid antioxidant. Quercetin plays a crucial role in maintaining capillaries and microvessels supplying the retina. It helps prevent cataract formation by inhibiting aldose reductase enzymes and works to neutralize free radical damage caused by blue light exposure.
  • Raw Unfiltered Honey: Acting both as a natural extraction solvent and a natural preservative, raw honey draws out the cellular juices of the onion through osmotic pressure. It supplies trace minerals, enzymes, and anti-inflammatory compounds that soothe mucous membranes.
  • Wild Blueberry / Bilberry Powder: Packed with anthocyanins , these deep blue pigments cross the blood-retinal barrier to support night vision adaptation, strengthen retinal pigment epithelium cells, and mitigate digital eye strain.
  • Organic Lemon Juice: Provides vitamin C (ascorbic acid), which acts synergistically with quercetin to strengthen collagen in the cornea and sclera, while balancing the sharp notes of the onion.
  • Fresh Ginger Root & Black Pepper: Fresh ginger contains gingerols, and black pepper provides piperine . Together, they increase systemic bioavailability, enhance blood microcirculation to the peripheral tissue of the eye, and aid absorption.

Primary Base

  • 1 large Red Onion (approx. 200g), preferably organic, finely diced or thin-sliced
  • 1 cup (340g) Raw, Unfiltered Honey (e.g., Wildflower, Clover, or Manuka)

Ocular Synergy Boosters

  • 2 tbsp Fresh Lemon Juice (strained)
  • 1 tbsp Wild Blueberry Powder or Dried Bilberry Powder
  • 1 tsp Fresh Ginger Root , finely grated
  • 1/2 tsp Freshly Cracked Black Pepper (enhances bioavailability)

Instructions

  1. Thoroughly wash and peel the red onion. Using a sharp stainless steel knife, dice the onion finely (or cut into ultra-thin half-moons). Micro-dicing increases the total surface area exposed to the honey, allowing maximum extraction of quercetin and sulfur compounds. Peel and finely grate the fresh ginger.
  2. In a clean, sterilized 16-ounce glass mason jar, place half of the diced red onion at the bottom. Sprinkle half of the grated ginger, wild blueberry powder, and black pepper over the layer. Pour half of the raw honey evenly over the mixture. Repeat with the remaining onions, spices, and honey. Finish by stirring in the fresh lemon juice.
  3. Seal the glass jar tightly with an airtight lid. Leave the mixture at room temperature away from direct sunlight for 12 to 24 hours. Over time, the honey will draw out the rich, aqueous juices from the onion via osmosis, turning into a smooth, liquid syrup. Gently tilt or turn the jar upside down 2–3 times during this period to ensure even liquid distribution.
  4. After 24 hours, place a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth over a clean glass container. Pour the mixture through, pressing down on the onion solids with the back of a spoon to extract every drop of liquid elixir. Discard or compost the spent onion pulp. Transfer the strained syrup into a dark glass bottle or airtight jar and store in the refrigerator.
