The Best Apples for Slow Cooking
When cooking apples for a long time, you want to use varieties that are firm and hold their shape well, otherwise they will turn into applesauce. Some of the best choices include:
- Granny Smith: Tart and very firm; balances the sweet glaze.
- Fuji or Gala: Naturally sweet and hold up well to heat.
- Honeycrisp: Crisp, sweet, and perfect for baking.
Ingredients Needed
- Apples (6 large): Peeled, cored, and sliced into 1/2-inch wedges.
- Brown Sugar (1/2 cup): Packed.
- Unsalted Butter (3 tbsp): Melted.
- Ground Cinnamon (1.5 tsp) & Ground Nutmeg (1/4 tsp): Warm spices.
- Cornstarch (1 tbsp): Tossed with apples to thicken the glaze as they cook.
- Vanilla Extract (1 tsp): Added at the end.
Cooking Steps
- Prep the Apples: Place the sliced apples in a large bowl. Toss them with the cornstarch, cinnamon, and nutmeg until coated.
- Slow Cook: Transfer the apples to the slow cooker. Pour the melted butter and sprinkle the brown sugar over the top. Stir gently to combine.
- Cook: Cover and cook on LOW for 3 to 4 hours, or on HIGH for 2 hours, stirring once halfway through. The apples should be tender but not mushy.
- Finish: Stir in the vanilla extract. Let the apples sit uncovered for 10 minutes before serving. The caramel sauce will thicken up as it cools.
