Instructions
Step 1: Prep the Roots
- Thoroughly scrub your fresh turmeric and ginger roots under cold water to remove any lingering soil. There is no need to peel them if they are organic; simply slice them thinly to expose maximum surface area, or use a fine microplane grater to release their potent essential oils instantly.
Step 2: Combine in the Simmer Pot
- In a small saucepan, combine the 2 cups of filtered water , sliced turmeric , ginger , cinnamon , and the pinch of black pepper .
Step 3: Simmer to Extract
- Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil. Once boiling, immediately reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a lid, and let it simmer gently for 10 to 12 minutes . You will notice the liquid transform into a deep, radiant golden hue and your kitchen will fill with a warm, spicy aroma.
Step 4: Strain and Emulsify
- Remove the saucepan from the heat. Pour the hot liquid through a fine-mesh sieve directly into your favorite mugs to catch all the fibrous root pieces. If you are using the optional coconut oil , stir it into the hot liquid now until completely melted.
Step 5: Sweeten and Brighten
- Allow the tonic to cool for just a minute or two until it is hot but no longer boiling. Stir in the fresh lemon juice and your choice of raw honey or maple syrup . Taste, adjust sweetness if desired, garnish with a lemon wheel, and enjoy immediately!
