Ingredients

For the Spiced Base:

  • 2 cups water (or sub 1 cup water + 1 cup unsweetened almond, oat, or whole milk for a latte consistency)
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric (or 1 tbsp fresh turmeric root, thinly sliced or grated)
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger (or 1 tsp fresh ginger root, sliced)
  • 1 small stick cinnamon (or 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon)
  • 1 pinch freshly cracked black pepper (essential for enhancing turmeric absorption)
  • 1 pinch ground cardamom or 2 crushed green cardamom pods (optional)

To Finish & Serve:

  • 1–2 tsp raw honey, pure maple syrup, or stevia (to taste)
  • 1 tsp coconut oil or ghee (optional, adds creaminess and healthy fats)
  • 1 wedge fresh lemon (optional, for citrus zest)

Instructions

Step 1: Combine the Aromatics

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the water (and milk, if using), ground or fresh turmeric, ginger, cinnamon stick, black pepper, and optional cardamom.

Step 2: Simmer and Infuse

  1. Place the saucepan over medium-high heat until the liquid reaches a gentle boil. As soon as bubbles form, immediately drop the heat to low intensity . Allow the tea to simmer gently for 8 to 10 minutes . This slow simmer extracts the full flavor, color, and essential oils from the spices without burning them.

Step 3: Sweeten and Emulsify

  1. Remove the saucepan from the heat. If adding coconut oil or ghee for extra richness, whisk it in vigorously while the liquid is hot. Let the tea cool for 1 to 2 minutes before stirring in your chosen sweetener (honey is best added once the liquid cools slightly off the boil to preserve its natural properties).

Step 4: Strain and Serve

  1. Place a fine-mesh strainer over two mugs and pour the tea through to catch any coarse ginger slices, cinnamon bits, or un-dissolved spice sediment. Add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice if desired, stir well, and serve hot.
