Equipment
- Air Fryer – Provides rapid, circulating heat that crisps the onion evenly without deep frying.
- Sharp Chef’s Knife – Makes clean, precise cuts through the onion layers without crushing them.
- Large Mixing Bowls – Essential for dredging the onion in flour, egg wash, and breading without making a mess.
- Oil Spray Bottle – Allows you to apply a light, even coat of oil to the onion for optimal browning without aerosol additives that can damage your air fryer basket .
Ingredients
- 1 large sweet onion (like Vidalia or Walla Walla) – provides sweet, mild flavor that caramelizes beautifully
- ½ cup all-purpose flour (or almond flour for low-carb)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
- ½ cup milk (or buttermilk for extra tang)
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed pork rinds/Parmesan cheese for low-carb)
- Olive oil spray – for crisping and browning
Instructions
- Preheat air fryer to 380°F (193°C) for 5 minutes .
- Prepare the onion: Cut off ½ inch from the top of the onion and remove the outer peel. Place the onion cut-side down. Starting about ½ inch from the root, make downward cuts through the onion, creating 8-16 evenly spaced “petals” without cutting through the root base .
- Let it bloom: Turn the onion upright and let it rest for 5 minutes to allow the petals to naturally spread apart. Gently separate any stuck petals with your fingers .
- Mix the seasoning: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper .
- Make the egg wash: In a separate bowl, whisk the egg and milk until well combined .
- Coat the onion: Sprinkle the flour mixture over the onion, using your fingers to work it between every petal. Shake off excess. Then pour the egg mixture over the onion, making sure it reaches all the petals. Finally, coat with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere. Chill in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to set the coating .
- Air fry: Spray the onion generously with olive oil, especially between the petals. Place in the air fryer basket and cook at 380°F (193°C) for 18-25 minutes, spraying once more halfway through. Cook until golden brown, crispy, and tender in the center .
- Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
Storage: Store cooled leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 3-5 minutes to restore crispiness . Allergy notes: For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs. For a dairy-free option, use plant-based milk . Flavor boosts: Add cayenne pepper to the flour for heat, use smoked paprika for a deeper flavor, or try Italian-seasoned breadcrumbs . Reheating: Always reheat in the air fryer or oven—not the microwave—to maintain the crispy texture . Storage: Store cooled leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
