Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Herbs

  1. If using fresh oregano, rinse the sprigs thoroughly under cold running water to remove any garden soil or dust. Gently pat the leaves dry with a clean paper towel. Strip the leaves from the woody stems. Lightly bruise or crush the fresh leaves between your fingers or gently slap them between your palms—this breaks the plant’s cell walls and releases its fragrant aromatic essential oils. If using dried oregano, measure out the crushed leaves.

Step 2: Boil the Water

  1. In a small saucepan or kettle, bring 2.25 cups of filtered water to a rolling boil over high heat (212°F / 100°C).

Step 3: Combine and Steep

  1. Once the water reaches a boil, remove the saucepan from the heat source. Add the prepped oregano leaves (and optional ginger slices, if using) directly into the hot water, or place the herbs into a fine-mesh tea infuser submerged in your teacup/teapot. Cover the pot with a lid to trap the volatile steam and essential oils.
  2. Allow the tea to steep according to your desired intensity:
  3. Mild: 3 to 5 minutes
  4. Standard: 5 to 7 minutes
  5. Strong: 8 to 10 minutes
  6. Note: Steeping for longer than 10 minutes can extract excess tannins, resulting in a noticeably bitter taste.

Step 4: Strain and Pour

  1. Carefully pour the liquid through a fine-mesh strainer into your mug cups to catch all tiny leaves and sediment. If you used a tea infuser or French press, simply lift the infuser out or press down the plunger.

Step 5: Sweeten and Serve

  1. Allow the tea to cool slightly for 1 to 2 minutes so it is safe to drink. Taste the plain brew first. If desired, stir in 1 teaspoon of raw honey or a splash of fresh lemon juice to brighten the herbal flavor profile. Serve warm.
