Servings2 servings (approx. 2 cups)
Ingredients
- Water: 2 ½ cups (filtered water yields the cleanest taste)
- Fresh Turmeric Root: 1.5 inches, thinly sliced or grated (approx. 1 tablespoon of grated root). Substitution: 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric powder.
- Fresh Ginger Root: 1.5 inches, thinly sliced or grated (approx. 1 tablespoon of grated root). Substitution: 1 teaspoon of ground ginger.
- Black Pepper (Crucial for Absorption): A generous pinch (about 1/8 teaspoon freshly cracked). Note: Piperine in black pepper increases curcumin absorption in turmeric by up to 2,000%.
- Healthy Fat (Optional but Recommended): 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil, virgin olive oil, or a pat of grass-fed butter. Why? Curcumin is fat-soluble, meaning your body absorbs it much more effectively when consumed with a healthy fat.
- Sweetener of Choice (To Taste): 1 to 2 teaspoons of raw honey, pure maple syrup, or agave nectar. (Add after simmering so you do not destroy the delicate enzymes in raw honey).
- Acid/Brightness (Optional): Juice of 1/2 fresh lemon or lime, plus lemon wheels for garnish.

Instructions
Step 1: Prep the Roots
- Thoroughly wash your fresh turmeric and ginger roots. Because both roots have thin skins and you are simmering them, peeling is optional—just scrub them clean.
- Thinly slice the roots into coins or grate them using a fine microplane. Grating extracts more flavor and active compounds into the water faster, while slicing makes straining easier later.
Step 2: Combine and Simmer
- In a small saucepan, combine the 2 ½ cups of water, grated or sliced turmeric, grated or sliced ginger, and the pinch of black pepper.
- Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a rolling boil.
- Once boiling, immediately reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a lid, and let it simmer gently for 10 to 15 minutes . A longer simmer yields a more intense, robust, and spicy brew. Keep an eye on the liquid level, ensuring it doesn’t reduce too quickly.
Step 3: Enhance and Enrich
- Turn off the heat. If you are using coconut oil, butter, or a healthy fat of choice, stir it into the hot tea now so it melts and emulsifies into the liquid.
- Let the tea steep off the heat for an additional 2 to 3 minutes to allow the flavors to deepen further.
Step 4: Strain and Serve
- Place a fine-mesh sieve over your favorite mugs or a heat-safe measuring pitcher.
- Carefully pour the hot golden liquid through the strainer to catch all the fibrous root pieces and pepper flakes.
- Allow the tea to cool down slightly to a comfortable drinking temperature. Stir in your sweetener of choice (such as raw honey or maple syrup) and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for brightness.
